Three Questions To Help You Get To Know Yourself

by Yousra O'Harra
January 30, 2026

If you have ever felt as if you were disconnected from yourself, you aren’t alone. We all have those periods in our lives that make us feel as though we are lost and confused. We feel weaker about our goals and desires, and we may not know what we wish to accomplish in life.

In order to evaluate the things you need and want in life, take a look at the following questions. These questions will help you get to know your true self much better!

1. How would I describe myself using one word?

Are you funny? Happy? Courageous? Adventurous? Confident?

Yes, it may be hard to come up with just one word to describe yourself, but this is one way that will help you discover exactly who you are. If it’s difficult to answer this question, reflect on the reason for it. You might think of a lot of characteristics you would use to describe yourself, or you may even have trouble thinking of just one. Most of us don’t stop to think about who we are in this way, so it isn’t always that easy of a task. Acknowledge what you do come up with. Then, evaluate what that characteristic can teach you.

2. Where will I be in the future?

Setting a goal, whether for the next week or the end of the year, will help you focus on what you want. Remember, you don’t have to tackle all of your goals all at once. Think about something you would like to achieve by next week. Maybe you would like to take the afternoon off to pamper yourself or you would really like to finish a book you have been working on.

Next, think about something you would like to do by next month. Then, consider your goal for the next year. Maybe you’re hoping to get a promotion or travel by then. Visualizing what you want is the first step to figuring out who we are and where we want to be in the future.

While we all have goals, it often feels as though they are only abstract thoughts. Write down the things you would like to have happen in the future. Keep looking over your goals as you evaluate where you are in achieving them. Consider the things that could be stopping you from moving toward your goals.

3. What is my best memory?

Sometimes it helps to look back to your past to help you move forward to the future. Think about a time in your past where you were very happy. Maybe it was an event that happened fifteen years ago, or maybe it happened just last month. Think about how you would feel if that same incident happened today. Would it make you as happy as it did back then? This question will show you the way your needs and desires can evolve over a longer period of time. You’ll be reminded of your core values and what you like and dislike.
